Mummified Human Toe Stolen from Dawson City Returned to Rightful Owner with Apology Letter

Dawson City, Yukon — A mummified human toe that is the key ingredient in a strange drinking ritual in Dawson City and was stolen last weekend has been returned to its rightful owner.

The toe was stolen from the Downtown Hotel Sourdough Saloon in the Yukon.

“We’re happy as clams about it,” Sue Taylor, the “toe captain” at the bar in Dawson City, told the Alaska Dispatch News.

The mummified human toe is used as a bizarre garnish for the saloon’s signature drink, the Sourtoe Cocktail, and had disappeared after it was added to a drink at the hotel bar.

According to hotel manager Geri Colbourne, a couple requested the unique drink but the waitress was called away after pouring two shots. The toe was gone when she returned. According to strange tradition, drinkers must allow the toe to touch their lips to join the Sourtoe Cocktail Club.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed that it had zeroed in a suspect and even tried to contact him, but the person called the RCMP office in Dawson City on Tuesday, and said that he mailed the toe to the hotel. He also said he had called the hotel and offered a verbal apology.

The hotel received the toe on Thursday. The package contained the toe and a letter of apology. It was opened by an RCMP officer, who revealed that the toe was believed to be in “good condition.”

“Located inside the package was an apology letter, as well as the stolen toe,” the RCMP statement said.

“At the time that the package was opened, the toe was believed to be in good condition.”

The RCMP say charges are not expected to be laid.
