Dylan Hayes and Ger Hogan Sentenced Life Imprisonment for Killing a Person at House Party in Pallasgreen

Two men have been sentenced life imprisonment for stabbing a man to death at house party.

Shane Murphy was stabbed to death on April 30, 2015.

Now the court has found Dylan Hayes (22), of The Crescent, Kilteragh, Dooradoyle guilty of the murder of Shane Murphy. He was found guilty by unanimous verdict. Ger Hogan (34), of Raheen Square, Ballinacurra Weston was also found guilty of the same offence by a 10-2 majority.

“We are doing a life sentence ever since Shane was cruelly taken away from us.” Mr Murphy’s sister, Tracey Murphy, told the court.

The whole family was crying after the verdicts were revealed.

Tracey said her brother Shane was the youngest of eight kids.

“He was always laughing and joking,” she said.

The trial ran for 12 days. During the trial, the court heard that a group of people, including Ger Hogan and Shane Murphy, were drinking at Sharon Kelly’s house in Pallasgreen on April 30, 2015. Sharon was the girlfriend of Shane Murphy. Sharon was not drinking at the party, in which Ailish Flood and Jodie Byrnes were also present. Jodie Byrnes was in relationship with Hayes for some years, and they were still in contact with each other even after their split up.

On that day, Ms Jodi Byrnes phoned Dylan Hayes and told him that a man had tried to rape her in the house in Pallasgreen. She told him that when she woke up, she found the man named Wayne in the bed and her trousers around her knees.

Hayes soon arrived at Pallasgreen and told Jodie that he was going to get the “rapist bastard.”

However, Sharon Kelly told didn’t believe Jodie Byrnes’s claim (as she told the court) and told Hayes that Jodie was lying.

“Did you call me a junkie?” Hayes then asked Shane Murphy.

Hayes told gardaí that Murphy responded: “Yeah, I did. What are you going to do about it?”

Hayes then went to the kitchen (according to his statements to gardaí), got a knife there, and then stabbed Shane Murphy in the sitting room. The wounds badly damaged Shane’s heart, lungs and the liver.

According to the prosecution, Ger Hogan was also involved in this case to murder Mr Murphy. Justice Patrick McCarthy imposed the mandatory life sentence on Hogan and Hayes.
