Carcass of a 25-feet-long Whale Found Washed Up at Puri Sea Beach in Odisha

Carcass of a whale was found washed up behind Panthanivas on Puri sea beach in Odisha this morning.

Forest department officials has now recovered the carcass and sent it for autopsy. The exact reason behind the death will be known only after the autopsy.

Forest department sources said this whale was about 25 feet long, and the high tides due to strong winds carried the carcass from deep sea to the beach. The official think the animal might have died 4-5 days back, probably after hit by a ship or vessel.

“It seems the whale has been dead for past several days. Stale smell is emanating from the back side of the whale, while its face is in good condition. We will conduct a postmortem to ascertain the reason behind the death. JCB machine has been hired to lift it from the beach to bury it,” Bhimsen Das, a forest official said, reported Odishatv.in.

Huge crowd arrived near the spot to see the dead animal. People wanted to capture the picture of the carcass.

This is the second instance, within 45 days, of a carcass found washed up in Puri. Earlier in February, carcass of a 30-feet-long whale had washed up at Balukhanda beach in Puri.

In an unusual event in New Zealand, more than 400 pilot whales were reported stranded in the sand at Farewell Spit at the northern tip of the South Island. Most of the whales later died despite efforts from conservation workers and volunteers to keep them alive by sloshing water over their bodies using buckets.
