Honda Canada Recalls About 53,000 Odyssey Minivans in Canada

Honda Canada has said that it is recalling about 53,000 Odyssey minivans in Canada and that the parts required to fix the problem will not be available until spring.

The minivans are being recalled because of the faulty second-row seats that may not lock into position, and may suddenly shift during a crash. However, no crash or injury linked to problem has been reported so far. The company discovered the problem through warranty claims.

According to Honda, 52,710 Odyssey minivans from the 2011 to 2016 models are being recalled.  Initial recall notices to Odyssey owners will be sent only after mid-February. The company will send a second letter only when parts become available. The company didn’t reveal any specific date for availability of parts, but said the parts will be available in spring 2017. Extra springs and brackets will be then installed into the affected vehicles without charge.

Meanwhile, the company is advising Odyssey drivers and passengers to manually lock the seat into a fixed position while using the vehicle.

Honda is also recalling 633,753 Odyssey minivans in the United States and the process is expected to start Jan 23. The company confirmed that it is stopping the sale of Odyssey minivans in the country. The automaker explained in its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the fault involves a lever that could remain in unlocked position. As a result, the seats could suddenly move.

Based on the NHTSA record, Odyssey minivans have been subjected to three other recalls. In 2011, 33,341 minivans in the US were recalled because of windshield wiper problems, which hampered driver visibility in extreme weather. The company also recalled 3,000 minivans in 2011 after finding that the windows in the passenger cabin of affected vehicles had tendency to shatter. In 2013, a larger number of Odyssey minivans were recalled because of missing airbag rivets.
